MARDI GRAS CELEBRATIONS
At the Royal National College in Hereford, in February we celebrated mardi gras by serving a variety of pancakes (crêpes). We tried sugar and lemon, ice cream, chocolate and banana. They were delicious! The students did not know that mardi gras, as it is called in France or shrove Tuesday (pancake day) as it is called in England, are the same day. We did not know that mardi gras is originally a religious festival. It was interesting to find out the differences and similairities between our celebrations of the same day.
Some students also learned how to prepare their own pancakes in the lodge kitchens. We discovered that eggs, flour and milk are needed - it is very simple.
Also for mardi gras we tried to make bugnes - they were very difficult! We will have to try and get a good recipe from our French friends. So instead, we looked for some French specialities in local shops and found galettes, florentines, and sablés. We were surpried to find French biscuits in Hereford.
Next year we will try savoury pancakes as they eat in France.
